Sony to prevent selling of pre-owned PS3 games?

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

It's being said that Sony's said they'll no longer allow people to "own" the games they purchase for full retail prices at stores. It seems you're only buying a license to "rent" the game. So, by law, you will never own the game, and, thusly, you will never be able to, say... resell it on eBay or something.

Good going, Sony. You're dead.

Oh sure... blame it on inflation.

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

There's been a recent influx of Playstation fanboys who have begun to use this console price chart to say that, based on "current economy" and "currency inflation" (and all these big words they quote, but probably don't understand (I'm so mean)), the Playstation 3's outlandish cost isn't so bad.

A comment for a Slashdot article about an interview with Satoru Iwata made me look at the chart again just now...

So I've seen the chart... and I'm still laughing. Why? The chart that everyone's using to say "$600 ain't so bad" shows that Nintendo has always released their main consoles in the US for $200 throughout their entire history. NES... SNES... N64... Gamecube... all $200. Playstation? $300. Playstation 2? $300. Playstation 3? $600? Hehehe.

So who's getting a Nintendo Wii?

*raises paw*

Stock Charts: Nintendo vs. Sony

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

Sony's stock continues to decline in the wake of E3, while Nintendo is flying high. Apparently, investors are not impressed with the PS3.

...and people say Nintendo is a weak company incapable of withstanding the onslaught of "real" companies. Finally the proof is surfacing that Nintendo was never out of the picture.

Sony Says: 5 Million People Will Buy PS3

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

Testing out a Digg post... not sure if I like it. Hmm.

Anyway... interesting article telling about how Sony claims that they're so awesome, 5 million people will buy a Playstation 3! Oh, but it gets better! They go on to say that 5 million people will buy a PS3... EVEN IF IT HAS NO GAMES.

Man... this is too funny.

Nintendo UK Says Sony Copies Everything

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

Gamasutra: Nintendo UK's Yarnton Criticizes Sony For Copying

In a report posted on the online edition of British trade paper MCV, Nintendo UK General Manager David Yarnton has commented on Sony's new motion-sensing controller unveiled at E3 for the PlayStation 3, suggesting aggressively that the company not only copied Nintendo in this instance, but also several times in the past.

Yarnton also pointed out Sony's shift regarding the Wii's unique controller from when it was first unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show in 2005. "I'd love to dig up some old Phil Harrison comments and say 'hang on a second - six months ago when we launched our controller you said one thing, and now why are you doing this?'" commented Yarnton.

The Nintendo UK executive also went on to insinuate that Sony's new controller technology is just the latest in what has become a habit of of copying Nintendo's innovations, stating: "I don't know what their decision making process is but I think if you look back, any innovation that has come in gameplay has come from us."

He also commented on the lack of force feedback in Sony's new controller, blaming patent issues for the reason why it was cut out of the design. "We know Sony have had a lot of issues with their rumble feature and they’ve had to withdraw it - because they didn't innovate, they copied," sniped Yarnton.

The MCV report concluded with Yarnton's assertion that Nintendo is an innovator in the video game marketplace, stating, "With Nintendo, I'm trying to think of anything we've copied... but I can't."

Will people believe Nintendo now?

Sony, Sony, Sony...

Friday, May 19th, 2006

People are finally beginning to see what I've been saying all along...

Sony's main reason for releasing the PS3 has always been to give Blu-Ray a push. Unfortunately, this is making the console extremely expensive. It's so expensive that many, many people are not going to buy it when it first hits the market (if they'll ever buy it at all).

It seems the only people saying the PS3 is cheap... is Sony... and that's like... duh. Sony's not going to say their product is too expensive. Ever. They keep saying that "it's cheap for a Blu-Ray player" and people keep saying "we're not buying it for Blu-Ray!"

The jump from VHS to DVD was an enormous improvement. People argue that, side-by-side, HD-DVD/Blu-Ray vs DVD is also an enourmous improvement... but only for people with the capability of watching HD content. How many of your friends or family own an HDTV? My cousins might have one. It's widescreen, and they were watching ESPN. So I know of one person with an HDTV. The rest of us probably won't consider upgrading unless our current TVs explode.

But even then, HDTVs are still far, far more expensive than regular TVs. It's not at all like saying "oh, rats, my CD drive melted... ooh! DVD drives cost the same! I'll get one of those!" Granted DVDs have been around for a long time already, but that's my point.

HDTV hasn't been around that long, yet. It's still too expensive for most people to justify, especially when they think DVDs are good enough. Which, in my opinion, they are. If you get a long movie, you'll start to see some odd compression, especially on a computer, but, for the most part, it's a far beyond VHS quality.

I think this new-fangled High-Definition movement is moving too fast. People aren't ready and they're simply not going to buy it, and as a Slashdot commenter said, Sony is trying to create demand for a new format with a product whose price can only be justified if you already have demand for that format.

There's no demand for HD media, yet. Not by the majority of regular folk who can't see any sense in shelling out almost several thousand dollars (PS3 + HDTV) just to be able to SEE the HD content. What's the point in buying Blu-Ray without HDTV? There is none. Just forget it. It won't look any different. Sure Blu-Ray holds a lot more data for games, but why? I don't think games will get bigger, just prettier with larger textures (that you'll only see a difference on HDTV).

See what I'm getting at?

Microsoft is pushing HD media, too, but their success isn't tied to if HD-DVD succeeds. Sony wagered their entire gaming division on the success of Blu-Ray... if Blu-Ray fails, the PS3 will remain extremely expensive in an attempt to glean some profits off developing an entirely new format.

I pretty much just went over what everyone else is saying... but I still enjoy watching these developments. Now if only Sony could understand that people started becoming distrustful of them when they released that horrible rootkit in their music CDs... They probably won't. But it would be very pleasing to me, at least, if Sony as a console manufacturer dissolved much like Sega and someone new took their place and added something awesome to the market.

Maybe give Nintendo a little competition again. ;)

Don't think Sony copied Nintendo? Read this.

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

There've been Sony fanboys popping up out of the woodwork saying "hey, you can't prove that this is a fast attempt at pulling the crowds from Nintendo! they could have has this for longer than you Nintendo fans think!"

Well... the good folks at Joystiq asked Dylan Jobe (you know, the developer who demonstrated how Warhawk uses the new controller during the conference) when they first saw the controller.

The response?

"We've really known officially for about a week and a half, and we did the final tuning just a couple of days ago."

This isn't a quick job by Sony, eh, guys?
