Political Blog

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

I have reached a decision that's been in the back of my mind for quite some time... I recently read the main page of my blog and what I saw made me laugh: Rants about Spore's DRM and Wikipedia's censorship sandwiched between deep, controversial political posts. Essentially, that's what this blog has become. An uncanny mesh of political commentary and my personal geeky life. When I first broke into political commentary all those months ago, it was only a pastime. I would work, I would play, and in my free time, I would listen to political shows and read political articles. Now, politics has taken on a more prominent position in my life, where I now read and listen to political news ALL DAY. It's part of my daily regimen now... It's no longer a "I'm bored, man... Oh, let's see what's going on in politics today", it's a "Ahh, that was a good night's sleep... Alright, let's see what's going on in politics this morning before I go to work," and then "Ugh, I hate work so much... Time to read up on what's going on in politics." It's the core (of Spore?) of my life and I think it's beginning to interfere with the casual, personal feel of Rivenwolf.net.

So... I'm going to make a new site with a slightly more professional layout that's entirely dedicated to political commentary. That way, people with an interest only in politics will be comfortable with knowing that I will post only politics there, and people with an interest in only my personal life (aka: nobody) will be comfortable knowing that I won't be randomly tossing out intentionally controversial posts. (As I've said before, I think Americans have a duty to follow politics, since we are a country built from the ground up to give us all the privilege of voting for our leaders, but I do understand that there is a time and place for it... And I don't think this is the place for it any longer.)

What I'm having trouble with... Is the name. I'm absolutely horrible with names. Even this site was grown from long standing nicknames (Rivenwolf and GermanShepherd) tossed into a blender with a synonym for "home". Pretty unimaginative, even though it did inspire the title of another blog. (Mine came first, NYEAH!) I've asked people about it, and they haven't come up with anything, either... A friend suggested "The Shepherd Report"... (Reference to "The Colbert Report" for all you stupid people who don't get it.) I heard MoveOn.org mentioned on the radio today, and my mind shifted into gear and I thought: "They seem to think that being radically liberal is moving on and progressing and that being conservative is being "stuck" in the past... I should call my site StayPut.org." Both are very good ideas... But I don't think I want to parody a liberal source. I don't want to come across as an alternative to any SINGLE liberal source... I want to be an alternative to leftist liberalism as a whole.

You people know what I'm like. I'm a Christian... I'm conservative, I'm Republican. I say what I mean and mean what I say and I make no bones about it. I don't care if it's controversial or insensitive or politically incorrect, I'm going to blurt it out without regard to anyone's feelings because, to be honest, feelings are a pretty silly way to judge morality and character. Something is either moral or it isn't... Emotion and feeling are the two prime ingredients in a moral relativistic society and I don't prescribe to that idea. If something is wrong, I'm going to say it's wrong and if your feelings are hurt in the process, then too bad. However, I try not to go on a drunken rampage of anger... I don't think I've actually replied to someone out of anger. Heavy sarcasm and cynicism? Oh definitely. I take after Rush Limbaugh in that regard. I wouldn't call myself arrogant, and I'm open to people leaving comments to tell me their views if they want to, and if they present their views well and with ample evidence or proof to the contrary, I'm open to opposing views... I am, after all, not perfect. However, there are some things I simply will not compromise with, and some people call that close-mindedness. They can call it whatever they want... Everyone draws a line in regards to what they can tolerate and what they won't. My lines just happen to be drawn far stricter than most and people think that's intolerant... No, it's just LESS tolerant. Tolerance, after all, is the virtue of a man without convictions.

Of course, I'm not just against liberalism... I'm against hypocrisy, bad leadership and lies on all sides. Even today I've heard about conservatives who are joining in with the liberal cries that Sarah Palin is not who we want. Peter Heck said (and I agree completely) that some conservatives have clung to the idea that the Republican party isn't going to adhere to what they want so much, that they're decrying Governor Palin as well, because she isn't EXACTLY what they want. You aren't ever going to get EXACTLY what you want, but this is what we, as conservatives, have been waiting for all this time: The Republican party is courting conservatism once again and if they don't get into the White House this year, they WILL think it's because Sarah Palin was labelled a "radical conservative" and they won't listen to us anymore. I may get into this in a later post, but my point is... I'm not just "ARGH EVIL LIBERALS RAWR!" I'm going to jump on any subject that I think is wrong no matter who said it. (It just so happens to be liberals who say the most stuff I think is wrong.)

So I don't know... I need another site entirely for my political posts. I may even invest in another domain name, if I come up with something that'll fit there easily. If not, I may just set it up under politics.rivenwolf.net or something... Keep it under the same roof, so to speak, but that seems to make it cheaper somehow. It's not a pastime anymore, it's something I put a lot of effort into, so I think it needs a prominent stance, too. It needs a name that's compatible with a domain name, too. Something that's memorable, but short. Not something bland and stereotypical like "Conservative Post" or all the other conservative sites seem to use. I mean, not that the name in any way detracts from the content, but it still seems so... Blah. Now, see, something like NewsBusters.org is memorable and short and easy to type. And then comes the whole "Do I get (name).com or (name).net or (name).org?" Do I get .COM because it's what people seem to automatically assume an address to have, or do I get .NET because I'm not a commercial entity? .ORG insinuates a non-profit organization, which I'm just one person... Not an organization at all. Then again, RushLimbaugh.com and PeterHeck.com are... Obviously both .COM domains and neither are commercial enterprises. They just picked them because that's the natural assumption.

Ugh... So many things to consider. Any input would be nice!
