Battlestar Galactica

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

After that depressing bit of Sony news, I thought I'd post this little gem.

You know that the SciFi Channel, owned by NBC, just cancelled Stargate SG1, right? No eleventh season because SciFi called it "too expensive". Fine, whatever you say. Luckily, MGM has confirmed its wish to continue producing Stargate SG1 in a couple of direct-to-DVD movies. That's good, but that's not the point of this post.

A couple years ago, SciFi decided to fund a little abomination called "Battlestar Galactica". Yes, that old 1978 TV series that rivaled feature length movies of the time. But see, SciFi decided to "reimagine" BSG. They screwed with the storyline... they screwed with the characters... they screwed with the mythology... they screwed with everything possible and turned it into a show full of people sleeping with each other in order to get what they want. It's a disgusting recreation of a classic science-fiction show that is arguably better than Star Wars.

SciFi's proud of this little piece of junk they've concocted, and the viewers who don't know any better are just eating it up. For some reason, they just can't get enough of "new BSG". Me, I feel like losing my lunch when I hear the phrase "new BSG". Such a horrible twisted reinvention. But SciFi loves it. More than Stargate, it seems. I mean, of course! Why not? It's a SciFi original series!

Well, see, they enjoy putting Stargate on hiatus during the winter season for NO reason. For nearly six months, they pause both Stargate serieses in the middle before starting it up again in March. Why? Probably just because they can and nobody can do anything about it. This year, though, they were musing about an idea to pause Stargate for LONGER than usual so as to give "new BSG" a chance to "get out from under" Stargate and stand on its own.

See, "new BSG" is sandwiched between Stargates. I believe it goes Stargate SG1, then Stargate Atlantis, then "new BSG", then a repeat of SG1 and then a repeat of Atlantis. "New BSG" is riding the wake of the ever popular Stargate. People who might've missed the first airing of Stargate will sit through "new BSG" and, oh! It's a rating! "New BSG" is being watched, yay! (At least, that's my opinion.)

Welp, guess what? With the announcement that Stargate SG1 is being cancelled, and the on-going Stargate haitus until March... "New BSG's" ratings are dropping... and it seems to be dropping rapidly and sharply. I mean, it's enough so that there's a call to write SciFi to tell them to clean up their act before everything just collapses.

I just knew this would happen. "New BSG" is riding the ratings of Stargate. It can't stand on its own and the current ratings are proving it. It's NOT a good science-fiction show. It's NOT a good show, period! I don't want it, and I don't think anyone else should, either. People that do watch it have no respect for the original 1978 series.

It's sad to think that "new BSG" used to be slated as a sort of continued version of the original series, and that Bryan Singer (one of the best movie directors ever) was going to head up the project. It was going to keep the original mythology and all the original characters, but I believe the premise was that the fleeing Colonials eventually gave up on their search for Earth and settled on a random planet. Don't quote me on that, though... ask Capella. She knows. But the fact was that "new BSG" was going to compliment original BSG! But someone higher up decided to completely recreated the story and churn out this sickening junk that everyone will think of when people mention "Battlestar Galactica".

Me, I'll always remember the original series, and I'm laughing at SciFi's perdicament. They got their wish. "New BSG" is on its own, and it's FAILING. Yes! That's good news! ;)

Sony, Spawn of Evil

This isn't a Sony Says... but, more like Sony Did.

Anyway, a few days ago, news started circulating that Sony was complaining about retailers exporting their game devices against Sony's wishes. How they can do that, nobody's quite sure. Fanboys are saying "it's their product, they can do what they want", but what Sony's essentially trying to do here is prevent people from, say, Europe... buying their stuff from Japan. The majority opinion is that Sony enjoys jacking up the price of their stuff in Europe for nobody knows what reason, and that when companies export from Japan to Europe, then Sony's not getting that extra money from the jacked up price. Importing is good for Europe, but bad for Sony, so Sony wants to stop exports/imports. Dumb.

Well... Sony got their wish. Their target was an awesome little online gaming store that went by the name of Lik Sang, based in Hong Kong, that carried quite literally anything you could ever want for your modern gaming needs. Adapters you've never heard of... modification chips... consoles... games... whatever you can name, they had it, and that's seriously no lie. Unfortunately, Sony noticed that European customers were buying PlayStations from Lik Sang for a variety of reasons. The major reason being that whatever they were buying simply wasn't availible in Europe yet, and they were being fans of Sony and didn't want to wait! That's good, right?

I mean, Lik Sang even has proof that Sony CEOs bought Sony products from them because they were simply too hard to find for themselves. When Sony can't find Sony products anywhere but Lik Sang, you know you've got yourself a perfect job. That's good, right?

Wrong. Sony didn't like that. Sony got angry. You don't want to deal with an angry Sony. An angry Sony is like an angry 5 year old. They don't listen to reason, but they'll pitch a fit and scream and holler and go insane until they get their way. Unfortunately, Sony has enough money to fund their little whiney endeavors. So what did Sony do? They sued Lik Sang. Several times. From different countries. It doesn't matter if Lik Sang could win. They just simply couldn't afford to fight in so many courts at once... so they went out of business.

You realize that Sony just successfully attacked a retailer for exporting Sony products, even though that's perfectly legal? A retailer that Sony BOSSES bought from because the products were so hard to find! (Which, incidentally, is entirely Sony's fault by delaying releases for no given reason.) Well, see, they did have a "reason" for suing Lik Sang. They claim it was because their products weren't rated safe to use with European electricity. Lik Sang tried to point out that they were selling the things with official Sony AC adapters rated for worldwide voltage, but nobody listened.

So Lik Sang, the best online videogame store, period, is now completely out of business. They're refunding everyone orders and preorders and terminating all existing transactions. Why? Because Sony wants to extort you for MORE MONEY.

Where are the fanboys now?

EDIT: Well, I guess they DID actually go to court, but the verdict is still the same.
