My Look at the PS3...

Sony's Conference the Day After

Sony's gone insane. (In a bad way. Not old CyanChat "insane".) Which is good. I dislike Sony... so be prepared for a rather biased, bashing post! Hwahaha. (Although I think/hope I did a well enough job looking at things from at least a little unbiased standpoint... What Sony had to show was less than stunning for anyone.)

First up on the list. The price. At first we thought it was two flavors. One with a larger, 60GB harddrive and one with a smaller one at 20GB. The high-end console is $599. The low-end console is $499. (Xbox360 high-end is $399. Xbox360 low-end is $299.)

On closer examination of the consoles (PDF warning), we see there are some differences between the two consoles that weren't openly reported. See page three of the PDF. You'll see that the low-end console lacks memory card slots (on a console?!!), wireless network card, and the suspicious lack of HDMI. You know what that's used for? Playing games and watching those Blu-Ray movies in high-definition.
I mean seriously... no memory card slots? Some standards setting there, Sony.

People are reacting quite adversely to this new information. You see, the Xbox360's two console versions were essentially the same console. Say you bought the Core System (low-end) and then wanted the benefits of the Platinum System? You can upgrade your plan. It's mostly a software difference... no hardware limitations. So people are saying "Hey, Microsoft's an idiot, and they made an upgradable system. Why didn't you?!"

Then there's the article that says the PS3 graphics are hardly more stunning than the Xbox360, which is really the only selling point that Microsoft and Sony have for their new consoles. They're almost exactly like their last-generation counterparts... only stronger. Like the article says, folks with the Xbox360 shouldn't feel like they're missing out on anything.

...and then, of course, there's the controller they so obviously stole from everyone's new-favorite company Nintendo. Sony, a "god-like" company who "masters the videogame market" is copying from Nintendo, a company that "makes kiddy games" and "can't do anything right". Apparently, Sony's controller only functions as a sort of tilt-meter. Who wants to guess that a tilt-meter is all they could develop between yesterday and the day Nintendo announced their controller? Well, I will!

Sony was also pushing their online capability, which has been reported to look... not much more than what the new Xbox360 Live looks like. Who could have guessed? They also say it's going to be free online access. Just like Nintendo.
I also noticed the articles mention the display of PSP-to-PS3 connectivity. Can you say Gameboy Advance-to-Gamecube? Nintendo did it first, again. Only it seems Nintendo actually did at least a few things with the idea. It seems all Sony did was turn the PSP into a sort of rear-view mirror so far?

...and then they said "oh, don't forget the PS2!" But the article said nobody seemed to care, heheh.

Yes... there is much room for Microsoft and Nintendo to pull new unreleased tricks out of their hat. Especially Nintendo. They have the ears of the entire gaming world right now since Sony more or less just flopped. I can't wait to hear the news pouring in after their conference!

Oh, I found this really funny. Someone on Slashdot said "the very best thing about the PS3 is that it has provided the ONLY thing to make me happy about the name 'Wii.' That being of course 'PlayStation ThWii'"... Hahaha, that's awesome. Playstation ThWii. I also saw someone call it the Playstation ThWii60. Heehee.

(Strange) Special Requests

Okay... after Phox made fun of me, and nomad just went all weird-eyed at me (and, ultimately, neither cared)... I thought I'd ask if any of you readers would know these two movies based on my rusty memory! :D

First... I believe it's set in underwater. I saw it many moons ago. I'm thinking very early 1990s. Had a very 80s looking feel to it, if you know what I mean. (Hey, it's almost 4am.) There was a group of people in an underwater base or submarine or something... and, for whatever reason, they were attacked buy a giant... crab-looking monster. All I remember is the end (or close) where they attempted to electrocute (I'm not sure if it was successful) the creature before escaping. They tried doing this in some big white room. The monster itself looked a lot like a crab... only it was big (duh) and dark brown or black. I remember it holding the electrical lines in it's claws... or maybe it was it's mouth. Long, coiling, bright yellow electrical lines. I can't remember if there was more than one of these things, but they only referred to it as "anthropod" or "arthropod".

I Googled all night for it... and I turned up a movie called Deepstar Six. I'm not sure if this is the correct title, since I haven't been able to find ANY screenshots on it.

The second movie is very much Science Fiction, and I hardly remember it at all, except for close to the end, of course. I remember a dark room with some sort of black computer terminal thing that people could enter. I'm thinking it was something like a virtual reality. (I think.) It seemed to be a really, really horrible movie, even for me at my age. But there were a couple of people trapped inside this terminal, and were exploring... or trying to find their way out... or whatever. It was odd because the terrain would change suddenly as they progressed. They came out onto a field of grass... maybe hills... and there were some gigantic worm-looking creatures there. Not sure what transpired, but the two people were fleeing the worms back through all the rooms they'd come through and the worm creatures were just busting through the walls behind them.

So somehow they eventually come out of the terminal, and the worms follow them out, as well and materialize in the room with them, where they're able to be destroyed. I remember them destroying the terminal, as if maybe that stopped the worms, I dunno. I just remember thinking that it was some sort of old computer-y movie and the worms were viruses that were able to enter the real world.

Was it Star Trek, maybe? I remember they had laser-type weapons. It was a really old style movie, too... Fwee, this is all from mind of a 21 year old who saw these things when he was 5... so things could be incredibly mixed up.
