Gamers Itching to Switch to Macs?

Heh... really? Since when?

Okay, so they're saying that now that Apple officially supports Windows running on Intel Macs, that people will start buying Macs to play games now. But... I really don't see how that's going to affect gamers.

The article says that hardcore gamers probably won't switch. PCs boast uber-hardware customization. While, yes, you can kind of upgrade hardware on Macs... but everything changes so quickly and drastically. I, personally, have never heard of a hardware upgrade in a Mac farther than adding more RAM. When the time comes, people seem to just buy a new one.

But anyway, Super Gamers are out. They like building their own computers.

So the article says that it'll probably be casual gamers that buy Macs. But, eh... how do they see that? They seem to attribute it to the fact that they upgrade their entire systems in one swoop when they need to. So let's assume a casual gamer is less technical, and just wants a computer that'll play the games they way. They aren't going to be able to build their own computer, even if they want to... so they just go buy one.

How does that translate into gamers switching to Mac? If they're a casual gamer, they're not going to shell out three times the money to buy a Mac, when a PC can do just as well for cheaper. Casual gamers don't go "zomg, I need this new l33t random bit of hardware to play this new game as GOOD LOOKING as possible, man!!!" They're going to say "will my computer be able to play it?" Meaning, they're not looking for the best... they're looking for just enough.

Mac hardware is nice, yep. I'll agree to that. But nobody will ever tell me that it's worth it. At least not yet... Macs are computers built by Apple with Apple's stamp of approval. This insures that Macs (usually) run as optimally as possible, but also with a hefty price. PCs are computers built by many, many companies with no real assurance that the devices will work together as best as they can. This causes bugs and crashes if you don't know what you're doing, but also keeps things cheap, since you've got competition.

Apple has no competition... save the PC industry. The PC industry has many manufacturers that compete for best device for the price... in addition to the competition that Apple throws out.

I dunno, I'm kinda getting off topic...

So, in short, I don't think gamers are going to look to switch to Mac much more than they are now... There may be a few gamers who'll try it out, at first, just to be cool. Maybe if people try it out, like it, spread the word, get more people to try it... who repeat the process.

But right now? Nah.

My uber-leet Mage just got appointed Arch-Mage of the Mages' Guild!

Go me!

Mage is only level 3, too, bwahaha.

I do so love Oblivion's scaled combat. It's awesome.
There's technically nothing you'll ever encounter that you can't handle.
