Progress Quest makes progress! (I'm so witty.)

Wednesday, February 8th, 2006

As Mister Ed mentioned on his blog (here), there's an awesome new RPG he just discovered!

PROGRESS QUEST

Unfortunately only for Windows at the moment, you basically download the program, start a multiplayer game (since single player is pretty pointless), pick a realm (Ed and I are on Expodrine), create a character, and start!

What do you do? Nothing. Seriously. The entire experience is completely and entirely automatic. You sit there and watch your character do everything for you. It's sort of like an old text MUD, only the program is a GUI that shows character stats, equipment, inventory, current quests, spellbook, plot progression, and what your character is currently doing. (Mine is currently "Executing a Stun Worm...")

The races and classes are pretty non-standard. Can't really explain it... you should take a look for yourself! Join the realm! Each realm has a Hall of Fame that keeps track of all players on the realm and gives them all a rank based on their power.

Check me out in all my glory!
I decided to be Fritick, the Talking Pony Runeloremaster! I rock.

My State of the Community Address

Wednesday, February 8th, 2006

Yes... the title's funny! Haha... funny, right? Right? Come on, laugh...

I knew it. With the release of a pinging Magenta client, we're going to have people who log in, lurk, minimize the window to do something else, forget about Magenta, and not remember until they restart their computer months later for some reason and then feel like visiting again, only to repeat the whole procedure because the other people logged in are lurking, too.

The whole community's mood has slowly changed following UruLive. There are pockets of friends scattered all over the place who don't go out of their way to open up to other folks. You can't get a any cool conversation out of people anymore, either. Hardly any at all unless you somehow mess up their fur and "offend" them and they go after you looking for blood, yet they TOTALLY and hypocritically expect you to just take what they say under this sickeningly misinterpreted "freedom of speech" thing everyone flings around.

Maybe everyone's been watching Stargate too much and the majority secretly decided to pretend to be the Goauld High Council. Mind your own business, avoid contact lest there be a crisis, and if there is a crisis, then blow away all opposition without regard to who's right or wrong, just that you were under attack and blood must be spilled before your wrath is appeased.

I've taken a hiatus from the entire community. I've been playing World of Warcraft a lot and it's been a brilliant distraction. But now that I've come back to check up on things... I've noticed that things haven't gotten better at all. Dare I say it's gotten worse? I think I'm going to take another leave of absence again. As before, I dunno when/if I'll be back, but I may periodically check in from time to time to say 'hi' to names I once called my friends, but now require more work and less fun to talk to, lest they erupt at some obscure comment.

In conclusion, the community still isn't fun anymore. When a community isn't fun, there's no use sticking around. Seems with each passing month, people get more and more crazy.

Take the Until Uru subcommunity as a prime example. Cyanworlds (the people who created Uru to begin with, you know... those guys... the people who OWN the rights to it... the people letting you mod it for absolutely nothing) said "don't release mods/ages/etc right now without asking, please! we need to work out some things." Half the UU community explodes like a huge fireball in the night sky whining and complaining that Cyan can't do that or some such bologna. I'm guessing the aliens known as Clockwork Orange BBS are behind some of that. They have a grand dillusion that Uru somehow belongs to them now. Taken from an advertisement for this stupid alcugs project: "At long last, fans have stepped URU up to the place it's meant to be with the Alcugs Project." Goes to show how heady these folks have become. (Must say, though, that phrase spawned an idea to use in my random taglines, heheh.)

Anyway, you guys need to become less "oh noez! he offended me! waah!", less "I know how it should be done, not you, so shut up", less clique-ish, and more friendly and fun... the way it used to be. I'm not the only one who says this either... and don't say I am. I've seen other people say this same thing and get shot at just as I have (and probably will be again). ...and before anyone (and I do mean "anyone") starts a long diatribe on how things have changed and I just need to deal with it. No. This is what I see in the community. Something that has been a part of my life for many years. It sickens me to see the thing decay to such levels. I personally thought this community was BETTER than the rest of the world. Lately, it isn't... people here get just as easily offended at random things as everyone else, and also preach "tooooooleraaaance! TOOOOLERAAAANCE!" at the same time.

Well, I can't "tolerate" it... and it's way too saddening to stick around to deal with it.
So once again... fare thee well, Myst fan community.
